Happy Friday!

I'm still a little unsettled about the unseasonably mild August we're experiencing. It's not a problem mind you but I will be watching for the moon to come crashing to earth on Eclipse Day. Speaking of which, you should have all heard by now that CMCA will be closed on August 21 to avoid the mess they are predicting for roads and emergency services. Please be sure to spend a little time learning about what is safe for watching the eclipse and making sure you have certified eclipse glasses. This eclipse website from NASA has the most comprehensive information I've seen. Please share this information with others.

The Strategic Planning committee finished some really good work today. The attached DRAFT plan is interesting because unlike in previous years, this plan focuses not on what we do but how we do it. It is about integrating our services, capturing better data to drive our decision making, tuning in to our culture, and expanding our resources. I hope you'll look it over. I'd be interested in your feedback.

The Strategic Plan

Last week's Wellness Day seemed like it went really well. I heard that many of your were worn out and got some good tips on safety, health, well-being, and quality of life. We also had a heck of a lot of fun. As I mentioned in my opening remarks, smiling is good for you! The benefits of putting a grin on your face at the office don’t begin and end with a mood boost; that dose of happiness can help make you a more productive employee as well. In 2010, a team of economic researchers found that happiness has a significant and causal effect on productivity in the workplace. And just as the positive emotions prove invigorating, negative ones are equally draining. Read more about it here. If you haven't had a chance to complete the Wellness Day evaluation, please do so while it is still fresh in your mind. It only takes a few minutes.

While I'm on the topic, healthy behavior isn't just something to think about on Wellness day. Perhaps you saw Mernell King's message about Mindful Eating. She said, "Hi Everyone! Following our recent Wellness day, and the training on Mindful Eating, I am hoping to launch a Mindful Eating Group here at CMCA. I am a certified trainer in the Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat program. This is not about a 'diet' - this is about living a more healthy lifestyle - and you may just lose weight, too………." Last, you should have gotten a message from the "Real Appeal Team" that Julie Aitkens referred to recently. The message should have arrived in your emailbox on Wednesday, August 9. This is an employee benefit available to you for free through our United Health Care coverage. Check it out!

You all are my favorite people to work with in the world! Treat yourself to a great weekend.
