Leadership Link July 21, 2017

Darin Preis

This week has been an emotional roller coaster for many of us. I'll focus on the good things here but just a quick reminder that when our jobs get emotional it is never more important to pick one of those 50 Ways to Take a Break. It is also a reminder of how important it is to build fun into our jobs so that we can balance out the hard times.

We celebrated another Step Up to Leadership class graduation this week. These classes are such a great reflection of the hope that CMCA offers. Another forty people were immersed in a poverty simulation this week too. Recognizing the realities of poverty is such an important step in our efforts to do something about it. Wednesday, I "leaned into discomfort" and spent the afternoon at the Women's Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center. It was a really uncomfortable feeling walking into those prison walls but I gained such an appreciation for the work our staff are doing with pregnant moms there. Yesterday I had the honor of watching Jackie Rivera give a presentation about Eat Healthy, Stay Active to the Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition . . . and then receive the 2017 Excellence in Connecting Health to Community Award! Congratulations Jackie!

I just wanted to give you a quick update on the Hott Butts BBQ competition. We have only gotten two team entries by the Early Bird registration deadline and no sponsors for the event. With this on top of some tricky logistics this year, I have decided to cancel the event. We will continue to analyze our events to make sure they are a good fit, and profitable. Events take a great deal of time and effort and with all the momentum we have on our development plan, I didn't want anything to hold us back. Did you know that 85% of all philanthropic contributions come from individual giving?

Below is the link to the Missouri Community Action Network's Training and Technical Assistance Survey for 2017. It will be used to guide Missouri CAN’s planning for network training needs for the 2018 fiscal year. I really want your membership in Missouri CAN to be meaningful to you and this feedback will help.

Also, I will be on vacation next week (yeah!!) so no Leadership Link. Julie Aitkens is in charge during my absence. Shonda Harbour will also be available as always at 573-443-8706 x1026 if you need to get something on my radar when I return.

Thank you so much for everything you do. You are so important to helping us fulfill the Promise of Community Action. Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community and are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.

Have a great weekend!
