Good Friday Afternoon!
Happy St. Patrick's Day CMCA! St. Patrick's Day is one of those odd traditions that make it so fun to be an American. Another odd tradition that isn't nearly as fun is the presentation of the President's budget each year. This tradition is the beginning of a long process to establish a federal budget. It is probably no coincidence that President Trump presented his budget on the first day of March Madness. Ideally Congress will approve a budget before the federal fiscal year begins on October 1, 2017 but that rarely happens. In fact, Congress has still not passed a budget for the year that started last October 1, 2016. The President's budget contains some scary cuts to the kinds of domestic programs we rely on and that provide support and resources for Americans who are struggling. However, I've been in Washington DC all week with our Board President and I'm actually pretty optimistic about our federal funding future. David Bradley, CEO of the National Community Action Foundation (the organization our local Missouri CAN chapter is always raising funds for), is confident that we are in a good position. Senator's McCaskill and Blunt are supportive of our efforts and we have supporters on both sides of the aisle in Congress. I am forwarding the following message from the Community Action Partnership for two reasons. First, if you want to dig in to the details and get involved in any way, these organizations are a good place to start. Second, I wanted to point out that there a LOT of organizations and leaders who are working hard on these issues. Everyday they are representing the interests of Community Action programs and the people we serve. Your role is to tell your family and friends that what we do is important and that we are using these federal resources as best we can to keep our communities stable. Other than that, get plenty of rest, eat smart, drink water, be healthy, and do the best job you can. Your success with each child, adult, or community group is the best case for our work and our funding. Keep up the great work!
May those who love us love us,
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So we'll know them by their limping.
